– Minister of education announces that PTA fees have been canceled
– The cancellation comes after parents complained about the increase in fees
– Henceforth, all school projects will be approved first by the ministry
As the ministry of education continues in its sweeping reforms of the educational sector, the minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has cancelled development and Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) fees in federal government colleges.
According to Daily Post, the minister approved the cancellation following complaints by parents about the increase in school fees from N20, 000 to N75, 000 of Unity schools in the country.
What this means is that henceforth, all development projects in schools would be done with the approval of the ministry, while PTA fees must not exceed N5,000.
Also , Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, on Tuesday, August 9 at the launch of the National Education Quality Assurance Handbook for basic secondary education in Abuja announced that there was a small increase in boarding fees.
She also explained that the increase was due to economic situation and would enable proper upkeep of boarding facilities and provide top quality meals.
Meanwhile, following the increase in school fees of Unity schools, a fresh battle is brewing between the federal government and the National Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of federal government colleges over what the latter thinks as the ‘cut-throat’ increase in the unity schools.
The PTA officers has accused the federal government of commercializing education in the country, warned that its members would now be forced to respond.
