EIGHT months after dropping the saddle as the deputy governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire on Wednesday evening was caught on the wrong side of the law when officials of the Lagos State government descended on the massive building belonging to her and sealed it for contravening building laws.
The twin blocks of flats located on Gbenga Ashafa Street, off Hammed Kasumu Street, opposite Greenwood House School, Ikoyi, Lagos was one of the mansions sealed by the state government for not conforming with the state’s building laws.
The exercise, carried out by the officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), also affected 12 other houses, seven of them mansions in highbrow areas of the state, which include Banana Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island and environs.
The security officer, who was at the building when the officials came on Wednesday, told The Guardian that the officials requested for some receipts before pasting the seal.
According to him, when they came at about 2.00p.m, the engineer handling the project was away. “I was alone with one lady, but they kept saying that certain fees were not paid and ordered that work should stop at the site immediately before pasting a seal on the gate.”
When The Guardian visited the mansion named Adejoke’s Court, the engineer had left the site with his men, while work has since stopped on the building.
Enquiries showed that the mansion was sealed because it failed to present general contractor all risk insurance policy, which the government said would cover the insurance of workers in the building and neighbouring property.
The offence, the officials of LASBCA, said was contrary to Section 48 sub-section 123 of the Lagos Urban and Regional Planning Law 2010.
The LASBCA General Manager, Olusola Adeigbe (an engineer), who led the enforcement team of the agency, was quoted as saying that government must enforce its law for the safety of lives and property.
The building, which is partially completed, The Guardian learnt, was to be commissioned in the matter of weeks before it was sealed on Wednesday.
